2020 was a record year for us financially. Our turnover increased to EUR 8.2 million from EUR 3.6 million the previous year, an increase of a whopping 127 percent.
Our actual financial statements will be completed later in the spring.
Our success is based on the growth of order volumes from our established customers, our rapid response in product development, and the profitability of our service business.
Last year was a successful one for us. Demand for our standard products increased significantly. Our many years of product development and belief in antimicrobial textile technology are now bearing fruit.
"We have worked hard for textile safety. It is great that we have now reclaimed our place as a pioneer in the industry. We also have a social responsibility to take care of people's health and well-being. Now, during the corona period, all disease-preventing solutions are necessary, and this is what our safe materials and products represent," says our CEO Anu Kivelä .
The corona pandemic marked our year – product development at a rapid pace
When estimates of the spread of Corona to Finland became stronger in February, we and our partner immediately began designing a durable antimicrobial fabric face mask for professional use.
Last year, we sold hundreds of thousands of fabric face masks to healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical companies, sports clubs, churches, and financial companies. The most popular fabric mask was the branded fabric mask we designed for Valtteri Bottas .
We delivered millions of disposable respirators to Finns. In the midst of the worst face mask shortage in April-May, we booked our own plane and rushed respirators from China to Finland.
In addition to face masks, we also imported protective coats and gloves for professional use.
"Some of our healthcare customers had their established procurement channels for protective equipment blocked. We wanted to take responsibility in a crisis situation and started supplying them with protective equipment. Without our reliable, long-standing partners, this would not have been possible," says Anu Kivelä.
"Our appreciation for healthcare professionals has grown even more. They have worked under enormous pressure over the past year. It is important that employers provide them with technical, functional and safe workwear," says Anu Kivelä.
Our service business is growing
Our service business also grew profitably. The turnover of our Jokilaakso laundry doubled. Our laundry in Jämsä services textiles for Jokilaakso Hospital and the city's service homes and daycare centers. The service business – textile rental, laundry service and logistics – is a significant part of our growth strategy.
Supporting customers in difficult times
Our financial success made it possible for us to help our customers during the difficult corona year.
"We donated tens of thousands of masks to restaurants and film crews, among other things. We were making it possible to organize the Finland-Sweden international match in Tampere by donating face masks to athletes, national teams, support groups and the public," recalls Anu Kivelä.
International markets opened up and the development of a sustainable textile industry continues
We passed an important milestone at the end of the year when we opened a store on Amazon Germany. International markets are now open to us.
“Thanks to digital tools, close work with our textile engineers and partners continued throughout the corona year and we were able to develop our materials despite travel restrictions. I am particularly proud of the product development! This year we are launching new, smarter, more responsible, and more environmentally friendly fabrics,” Anu Kivelä rejoices.
We achieved the year's great result with the same human resources by slightly reorganizing work tasks.
“My heartfelt thanks to all the people at Medan for their great work ethic and flexibility,” says Anu Kivelä.
